Bible Reading / Death Is Not the End: Healing & Hope Through Grief

Day 4 | Take Care of Your Mental & Physical Health

Read:

Grief takes such a deep emotional toll that caring for your mind and body can easily slip through the cracks. When you’re in pain, it may feel almost silly to think that something as simple as resting and eating well could make a difference—but it truly does. In seasons of loss, your body and brain are in survival mode, and that means your basic needs matter more than ever.

Jesus knows we need rest, and he promises to provide it. Scripture also teaches us to care for our physical bodies. In times of grief, it’s common to either lose your appetite or turn to food for comfort. There’s no shame in that—it’s a human response for coping. But that’s why God’s wisdom is so vital in this season. Honoring the body he gave us honors him, and it helps us begin to heal.

Don’t underestimate the power of rest and nourishment. These things fuel your mental and emotional health. Grief can lead your thoughts into dark and hopeless places where we are vulnerable to Satan’s attacks. This can lead us to question or pull away from God. But we are not helpless when it comes to our thoughts. God gives us the ability to take hold of them and lead them back to his hope-filled truth.

If there’s ever a time to “think about what you’re thinking about,” it’s during grief. God gives you the power to guard your mind and protect your heart, especially when sorrow feels overwhelming. Caring for your body and your mind isn’t selfish; it’s one of the ways you lean into God’s love and grace during this painful season.
